Reporting an Invention

To report new intellectual property, a Report of Invention (ROI) must be completed which includes assignment of ownership interest to the University. An ROI provides the necessary information about the intellectual property so JHTT staff can properly evaluate invention disclosures and pursue licensing opportunities.

In some cases there are biological materials associated with an invention.  In this instance, completion of a supplemental Biological Materials Form is also needed to designate and include the specific names and descriptions of any tangible materials associated with the invention.

Tangible property inventions, such as research tools for which patent protection is not appropriate, should be reported using the Tangible Property Disclosure and Assignment Form.

Once you have completed your report of invention, it is necessary for you to obtain signatures from each of the inventors named on the report of invention and the signature from the Department Director of each department in which the invention was made. JHTT cannot process the Report of Invention without the requisite signatures.

Mail your report of invention to:

Director
Johns Hopkins University
Licensing Technology and Development
100 North Charles Street, 5th Floor
Baltimore, Maryland 21201

Once we have received your completed ROI, a Licensing Associate will begin to work on intellectual property issues afterwhich the Technology Development Associate will begin to assess commercialization issues.   Together the JHTT Associates will explore opportunities for licensing.

The Licensing Associate will contact you to arrange a meeting or conference call to further discuss the details of your invention.
From the time we receive the ROI, it can take several weeks before we contact you and approximately 6 weeks to fully evaluate an invention disclosure.

The Report of Invention forms are available in a two formats; please select the form that best fits the nature of your disclosure (discussed above) and compatibility with your software from the choices below:
